Atmel has created an exciting new range of 8051 microprocessors and derivatives using flash memory for program storage. They also designed this programmer to allow rapid programming of the microprocessors. We have laid out the circuit board and added some extra features such as a programming light, but have not touched the logic. The software available on our site is a copy of what is available directly from the Atmel site, but we are supplying a more user friendly front end with every programmer purchased. Here is a screen shot of the software. The Auto program function goes through the following sequence, Chip erase, program, verify and setting of security bits for the appropriate device and that all in under 8 seconds on an 8k processor. The original IBM design for the print port did not allow for bi-directional operation, but most modern machines now have this feature. To check whether your machine has the required bi-directional port, download the PORTTEST.EXE below. Please note that most machines when shipped have the print port set to the original IBM design and you will need to set the printer port to one of the bi-directional modes before testing. Two of these modes are EPP or ECP. This is usually done by entering the BIOS setup immediately on starting the machine. Look for instructions on the screen such as "Press DEL for SETUP". The printer port setup is normally under a heading such as "PORTS and I/O". Due to critical timing of the ATMEL devices, the Programmer should only be used under DOS or Windows95. Changes to previous programmers. Atmel's earlier programmer software enforced timing requirements using software timing loops which made the software host-dependent. Many reported problems were due to running unmodified or incorrectly modified software on unsuitable hosts. The latest release of their software eliminates this problem. Host independence is achieved by using the Programmable Interval Timer, embedded in the system hardware to enforce time delays independent of system speed. The timer is reconfigured when the programmer software is invoked and restored to its original state before the programmer software terminates. In order to guarantee that the programmer software is not exited before the timer configuration is restored, the operation of the CTRL-C and CTRL-BREAK keys are disabled. This means that the programmer software cannot be aborted except by specifying the exit option at the main menu or by rebooting the system. Software support |
