Control-it 5256 - Automatic RS232-422 Converter

View the 5256 Manual (PDF)

Use the Control-it 5256 for full duplex communication over RS-485 or RS-422 with remote devices up to 1.2km away in order to:

  • Check production status
  • Control machinery
  • Gather statistics
  • Modify programs remotely
  • Control industrial networks
  • Extend your RS232 serial port
  • Control remote instrument

Some Benefits of the Control-it™ 5256 Converter:

Saves Time:

  • Requires no technical set-up procedures
  • Plugs straight into your PC serial port (DB9)
  • Standard RS232 software needs no modification to run a RS422 link point to point

High Performance:

  • Guaranteed to work over a data range of 300 to 115200 bps
  • Communication distance of up to 1.2km (4000 feet)
  • Uses the same proven technology as our popular Control-it™ 5001 unit

Versatile:

  • Small size, light-weight unit
  • The Control-it™ 5256 works with any terminal software
  • Transmission flow is automatic with the Control-it™ 5256.

Easy to Install:

  • DIN rail mounting with universal foot for symmetrical and asymmetrical rails
  • RS232 side takes standard DB9 connector
  • Screw terminal connector with strain relief for RS485
  • Transmit (TXD), receive (RXD) and STATUS indicators show data flow
  • Ready To Send (RTS) indicator shows data flow (5255 only)

Safe:

  • Full optical isolation protects your computer from power spikes
  • Robust, sealed plastic unit.

Warranty:

  • Three years

The Control-it™ 5256 is recommended for multidrop networks if the RTS signal is not controllable. The transmitter is only active while data is being transmitted. Recommended if Windows based software is used.

The following screen shots compare a character sent at 9600 bps, showing a conventional automatic converter versus the Control-it™ 5256.

To the left of point 'A', the RS422 line is floating and available to any unit on the line.

Between points 'B' and 'C' the line is being held without any transmission taking place. This represents wasted time as no other unit can transmit without data being lost.

The Control-it™ 5256 reduces this wasted time.

Total time wasted is 1300uSec

Time wasted is less than 200uSec
